Here are a few reminders on that old stand-by, baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate. Everyone knows to keep a spare box in the refrigerator to absorb odors, but sometimes we overlook some of the other common uses for this handy chemical. A solution of bicarbonate of soda, 4 tablespoons to 8-10 ounces of water, applied locally, relieves the pain of sunburn.
When a quick dip for crystal glassware or silverware is needed, prepare a solution of the powder in tepid-cool water (l level teaspoon to a quart) and brush with a soft toothbrush. Very good for glass coffee makers and thermos jugs.
Use a stronger solution to clean your stainless steel sink, the refrigerator, plastic counters, tabletops, and bathroom tile. It will also remove stains from china and enameled cookware.
To clean a greasy pan easily, add 1 or 2 teaspoons of soda to the water in which it is soaking. (and, why not use this nonpolluting and nonenzyme soak for a sinkfull of dishes?)
Fingers smelling of garlic or onions? Rub them thoroughly with a thin paste of soda and water, and rinse with warm water.
Emergency fire extinguisher: if a greasy pan catches on fire, turn the heat off and try to cover the pan. Spread a good dose of the powdered soda over the fire. (An oven fire is easily extinguished by merely closing the door after shutting off the heat.) Fill a large coffee can with the powder and keep it handy.
To remove grease spots from your dining room carpet, first sop up the liquid with a sponge, then rub a liberal amount of the soda into the spot. Let it absorb overnight. Next day, remove the excess and vacuum the area.
There are many good uses for this chemical, but do not use it for internal purposes. It has long been rejected as a remedy for stomach distress or urinary disorders. It may be considered a gargle, or mouth and nose wash. A teaspoon dissolved in 1/2 glass of water, it is claimed, leaves the mouth feeling "clean and fresh." And, of course, there's always the trick of brushing your teeth with it.
So, the next time you see baking soda on sale (store brand is just as good as the national brands) stock up, and use it for more than just cookies!
