Safer Driver Discount

My husband and I recently took a safe-driving class in order to get a reduction on our car insurance. In New York if you take the class, you save 10% off the liability and collision parts of your car insurance for three years on the car that you primarily drive. Normally the class costs $45 for each person, which would have cost us $90. However, a friend of ours told us that he teaches a class sponsored by AARP that only costs $8. So we took the course through AARP and saved $74.

I was told that AARP offers driving classes throughout the country. You do not have to be a member to take the class and you can be younger than 50 as long as your spouse is 50 or older. To find out about classes in your area, call 1-888-227-7669. In New York it is mandatory for insurance companies to give a 10% reduction. However, not all states require companies to reduce the premium. So check with your insurance agent before signing up for a class.
